The World Food Programme continues to receive financing from the Qatar Fund for Development to meet essential needs for food security. The World Food Programme (WFP) and the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) have agreed to a flexible multilateral core commitment of US$10 million to support humanitarian operations addressing urgent food security needs. This is an extension of the State of Qatar's commitment, which was made during the 2018 Doha Forum, to provide basic resources worth $500 million to support UN institutions.

The World Food Programme continues to receive financing from the Qatar Fund for Development to meet essential needs for food security.

Over the years, WFP and QFFD have worked together to address many humanitarian emergencies, including food insecurity and famine-prone regions. His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, declared in 2021 that he would provide $100 million to aid the World Food Programme's work in Yemen. And most recently, the parties signed an agreement with a contribution of US$90 million to support humanitarian operations to address Yemen's critical food security needs. Conflict, economic decline, and the COVID-19 pandemic are putting millions of people in danger of going hungry, and these factors are contributing to the situation.

The necessity of flexible contributions is formalised by this agreement since they are essential to WFP's emergency responses, ongoing relief activities, and recovery initiatives, wherever and whenever needs are highest. Additionally, flexible finances offer WFP the best certainty and flexibility to launch operations and finance unaddressed situations.

Today, the globe faces the impending threat of famine in many areas, and there are more than 800 million people who are suffering from chronic hunger, stated HE Khalifa Al-Kuwari, Director General of QFFD. To give people who are most in need around the world a dignified and stable existence, it is crucial to support initiatives to promote food security in local communities. And this is where the World Food Programme can help, by providing flexible grants like these, enabling us to quickly reach those in need. In order to help achieve the second sustainable development goal, which aims to end hunger, our alliance will have a significant impact on reducing hunger.

I would like to thank the Qatar Fund for Development on behalf of the World Food Programme for their prompt and substantial contribution to the Immediate Response Account. Flexible funding enables WFP to respond to humanitarian situations as soon as they arise, getting life-saving aid to those who need it most. The value of this support cannot be overstated, according to WFP Executive Director Mr. David Beasley.
