Europe urged making food instead of fuel from crops.
In order to free up grain for international markets, RePlanet, a nonprofit network with headquarters in the United Kingdom, is urging an end to biofuel restrictions. It states that in 2020, the European Union alone utilised over 3.3 million tonnes of wheat to produce biofuel, while Ukraine exported 16.4 million tonnes. While Ukraine exported 24 million tonnes of corn, 6.5 million tonnes were used for EU biofuels. In the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has significantly affected international grain imports, RePlanet called for biofuel requirements to halt.
According to the founder of RePlanet, Europe can and must defeat Putin's global food blackmail. Just as Europe must stop purchasing fossil fuels from the Kremlin by conserving energy, we must also contribute to the fight against world hunger by cutting back on food consumption at home.
RePlanet asserts that biofuels have carbon footprints that are comparable to or even greater than those of petroleum-based conventional fuels if the effects of fertiliser, farm equipment, and other factors are taken into account.
